Feeling out of touch

While I've been pretty much up-to-date on television and movies, thanks to piracy and my occassional indulgent purchase of Entertainment Weekly, some aspects of American pop culture have slipped by me.

I feel like I have suddenly woken up from a long sleep, and now find myself awake on a different planet.

This whole Twilight thing has got me completely suprised, and right now in the US it seems to be everywhere. Even on overpriced candy bars. It wouldn't be so strange to me if I had been away for more than seven months. Seven years maybe, not seven months.

I haven't gone anywhere, not even to Mexico, as I often do, and I had never heard of the Twilight Saga until you mentioned it.

So, not to worry! You're not that out of touch. I might be, but you seem to be doing fine!

I haven't been anywhere and I just heard about it the other day!

Don't feel so bad, some of us Mom's aren't as up on things as we used to be!

Don't feel bad. I never left the country, and I had no idea what it was until yesterday.

some of the part time high school girls that work at the store are reading these and I asked what they're about--"oh vampires.. romance..mystery" they gush...and so I mention Anne Rice's work..and they NEVER HEARD OF HER!!! so...meh...I bet it's just the pop/teen version of Anne Rices's Vampire Chronicles....

Apparently these are squeaky clean vampire books written by a Mormon. Wow! Is that weird! I'm not sure they would be worth reading, even for a teen. If you are into vampires--wouldn't you want the real, spooky thing? And if you are into romance and love, wouldn't you want a hero the girl could actually date/marry?

Well, from Wikipedia I gather that the Bella chick does date and eventually marry one of the vampires.

They are sparkly vampires. That's why they don't go out into the sun -- their sparkly shine.

No, I'm not kidding.

So yeah, this is just movie hype. It may or may not do well, in the current "paranormal romance" boom.
