What's a Steelersfan Mommyblogger to do?

In the middle of our Europe trip, I started getting messages from people back in Beijing about an NFL China event that was soon to be announced formally. The first of these was from the NFL China office itself, letting me know that a few members of the Pittsburgh Steelers' Super Bowl XLIII team would be visiting Beijing. One of those days, November 18, there would be a meet-and-greet with fans. And of course, all they knew about me was that I was a big Steelers fan.

Within a day I started getting messages from other people in Beijing, people with whom I watch football games on TV occasionally in the city. At this point, the players who would be coming was announced, and they would be Ike Taylor, Ryan Clark, and Troy Polamalu (!!!!!!!). There was teasing and cajoling in my chat rooms, as fans of rival teams are want to do.

Of course, on November 18, I would not be in Beijing. I would be in France with my family. Not meeting Ike Taylor, Ryan Clark, and Troy Polamalu (!!!!!!).

It was a good thing I had something to wipe away my tears.

More after the jump

It isn't like I regretted our trip, even one little bit. I just couldn't believe that the NFL was bringing not one, not two, but three former Pittsburgh Steelers, and Troy Polamalu among them, to Beijing during one of the weeks that my family happens to be out of the country. Seriously?

The three of them seemed to have had a good time, climbing the Great Wall  (at Badaling, meaning, they had to drive right past my neighborhood! I could have stalked bumped into them there!) and meeting football fans.

I guess the best thing about missing all this was that I (and the whole family) were spared my making a complete fan-fool out of myself in front of Ike Taylor, Ryan Clark, and Troy Polamalu (!!!!!!!). Without a doubt, being in the same room with Troy Polamalu would cause me such a severe case of awkward, sweaty, stutteriness that I would most likely resemble Chris Farley.

"Troy, do you remember when Brett Favre fumbled, and you recovered it, and ran it for a touchdown? That was awesome."

"Troy, do you remember when you intercepted Carson Palmer, and you ran it for a touchdown? That was awesome."

"Troy, do you remember when you intercepted Joe Flacco, and you ran it for a touchdown? That was awesome."

How do I know this is how it would have went down?

Because I'm someone who doesn't leave home without a Terrible Towel.

See? Just like in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, a towel means being prepared. Like if my son falls asleep in the Frankfurt and needs a blanket.

By the way, the secret to a good Terrible Towel picture is to find a moment when you are almost alone. It saves you from having to explain it to locals and other tourists.
