A language review for Advent, and a few new words, too.
将临期第二主日 Jiāng lín qí dì èr zhǔ rì The second Sunday of Advent
欢欣! huānxīn Rejoice!
The preparatory season of Advent coincides with out own preparatory season of going back to the US for Christmas. This year our departure was early enough, and we were so busy, that we did very little at home. We did not put up our tree, nor bake any cookies. I did dig out our Christmas books, buy a new family devotional, and put up my little Chinese nativity scene on the coffee table. The kids also had their Lego Advent calendars, part of their birthday presents we bought in Germany, but those don't really count toward welcoming our Savior, do they?
The last two Sundays we've observed Advent at our parish. In China we have really seen the Advent season grow (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2013. It was particularly nice to see how the seminarians were preparing for Christmas as well. It was a welcome pause to my own flurry of activity.
We have an advent wreath.
The choir has changed over to different songbooks.

This last Sunday, the second Sunday of advent, we heard the familiar song 人类救主请速降临, the Chinese translation to "Veni Veni Emmanuel," The title in Chinese translates to a rather urgent plea "Savior of Mankind please quickly." One option Google translate offers for 请速降临 is "come dashing," which makes me think of Jingle Bells. Anyway, it sounds so familiar, even in a different language.
Huānxīn! Huānxīn!
Yǐsèliè mín jiùshì zhēnzhǔ kuàiyào jiànglín
In further preparations for Christmas, the seminarians had begun decorating. There was an area by the choir that was behind screens and under tarps. We guessed it was the creche set, due to make a debut on Christmas Eve. Also, there were wreaths and banners hung everywhere.
On Christmas Eve, too, it appears they plan to light up Merry Christmas greeting.
It would be something to see, but we've returned to the US for Christmas again.
