Advent is coming
In case the onslaught of decorations and carols (even here in China) weren't already an indication, Christmas is approaching. The early creep of Christmas is hard to avoid in the commercial sphere, though we try to do our best in our church and at home by observing Advent (have you seen Amy's new Advent family devotional?)
In Germany, Advent also takes on a commercial role. I wasn't surprised to see the airport shops in Frankfurt already putting out the chocolate Advent calendars in October. However, when I started to see the different kinds of Advent calendars, meaning not just chocolate hidden behind paper doors in a winter scene, even as early as October, I was amazed.
Like this Advent calendar of tea. I considered buying this for Myles, my tea drinker, but it was early enough in our trip I didn't want to chance damaging it in our luggage.

For the Fußball nuts in your German household (that might be redundant), there were Advent Calendars celebrating the entire Bundesliga.
Though for some with a more specific allegiance, they would prefer something like this. Something with Echte Liebe.
Even Germans aren't immune to the wiles of cartoon tie-ins.
Myles and Brigid made a beeline for these Advent calendars.
And the one I was so tempted to buy myself (though I was deterred by both the 80 euro pricetag and the size of the package). Twenty-four days of mixed beauty products from The Body Shop to help the woman in your life patiently mark the days to Christmas.
