School-at-home surprises
I kind of wish I hadn't written this post last year, especially since I found myself wanting to write some of the same things again this week. The same overwhelmed, why-do-I-do-this feelings, yet rewarded by similar surprise.
Last year I was amazed at Brigid assigning herself copywork. She continues to do this off and on, much to my amusement. Today, again, she took on a project of her own making, yet related to what we had been doing earlier in the day.
She and I have started the Story of the World series. I wasn't sure if she were ready. Unlike Myles at her age, she hasn't been begging to learn about ancient history, but I figured now was as good a time as any.

This morning we read the introduction, about how archaeologists help us understand what life was like in the past, even when we have no written records. We followed this up with reading Archaeologists Dig for Clues from the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out series. I left her with the book for a few minutes before we left this afternoon to run a few errands.
At supper Brigid kept bothering me about something she wanted to paint tonight. I wasn't really paying attention to her, trying to convince her to wait until tomorrow. She started to get upset, telling me she really needed to get this work done tonight. Then she pulled out a piece of paper that she upon which she had sketched some things, explaining to me this was part of her history homework. She had copied some drawings from the archeology book, and wanted to paint them before she added it to her history timeline.
Much like her self-assigned copywork, she initiated this work on her own to supplement what we had already done. I am intrigued by what she thinks she is doing to facilitate her own learning.
