Return to Wonderland
After our Great Wall excursion Sunday, I asked Randy if we couldn't swing past the old Beijing Wonderland site. Seeing the new construction at the Great Wall reminded me we hadn't been by Wonderland in a while.
The last time we went to see it, it was being torn down. I wondered if there might be some construction completed. The unfinished amusement park stood for years. It was hard to believe there would be great motivation (and financing) to do something in this giant lot just north of Changping.
On the website of the property developer, they describe their new intention for the site to be a "Premier Outlet Shopping Center." That could be interesting. We pulled up to where the turnstile used to be, and our view was largely blocked by a blue construction fence. I was amazed. There was actually a lot of construction going on.
But what was that, in the midst of all the new construction?

It was...the old, unfinished castle with some of its steel skeleton exposed.
We drove up the road to get a better view, unobstructed by the blue fence. Such a massive, new construction, with old rusty castle.
The website says the mall is due to open in early 2015. I am really interested to see how they incorporate the castle into the design. I mean, the castle stood for so long, and in the last few years invited international attention, not all of it flattering. I am surprised that it continues to stand.
