What to learn
In the US, debates rage on about what to teach children in school. They are really nothing new, but the labels have changed. Whether it is Common Core, or International Baccalaureate, or whatever the latest trend, parents, teachers, and administrators can't seem ever to agree on what is best.
I was walking around a new Barnes & Noble in the Pittsburgh area and I couldn't help but notice their rather large education department targeting adult continuing education.
An entire shelf, as well as a giant Rosetta Stone display behind it, was devoted to helping adults who want to learn a foreign language, like Spanish or French or Mandarin.
I find it interesting what kinds of books Barnes & Noble sells in the stores to address what adults must wish they already were taught. In addition to the extensive world languages section there was also an aisle for instruction about writing code.
When we talk about education, and what kinds of subjects should be taught, does this factor?
