善牧主日 Shàn mù zhǔ rì Good Shepherd Sunday
圣召节 Shèng zhào jié Vocation Sunday, literally "Holy Summon Holiday"
Sunday was the fourth Sunday of Easter, known in the Catholic Church as Good Shepherd Sunday and Vocation Sunday. In China, we observed this, too. On our way into Mass we were greeted by some of the seminarians passing out these cards. One asked us in English, "Please pray for us."
The Bible verse was the same as our Gospel Acclamation. 我是善牧, 我认识我的羊，我的羊也认识我 Wǒ shì shàn mù, wǒ rènshi wǒ de yáng, wǒ de yáng yě rènshi wǒ. "I am the Good Shepherd. I know my sheep and my sheep know me."
The church was not as full as usual. In addition to it being a very cold, rainy morning, most of the seminarians were visiting other parishes in Beijing, raising awareness of the work of the seminary. A few remained in our parish that morning, with four of them addressing us about their vocation. At the beginning of Mass, our priest noted that everyone has a vocation, but today we were paying close attention to the vocations that led men and women into dedicated service to the Church. He did note that the coincidence of Sunday also being 母亲节(Mǔqīn jié), Mother's Day meant we would also recognize the vocation of motherhood after Mass.
