Shiny Happy Militarism
In the mall that recently opened a few blocks from our apartment is a small kids' entertainment center. Right before we left Changping for our Christmas trip, I took Myles, Brigid, and a friend of Myles' to play a bunch of games in the arcade as our holiday send-off.
Myles and his friend were all about playing more intense, monster-shooting games than Brigid wanted. She was drawn to some games that were much more adorable and, I was sure, more age appropriate for her.
Like this submarine.
I mean, this ride-slash-game was so cute. Surely, there was nothing about this that would give me pause, right?
More after the jump
I guessed that the screen inside the submarine would show tropical fish and maybe shipwrecks, something along the lines Finding Nemo or Jacques Cousteau.
Well, I was wrong. It was actually a video Battleship, with the goal of blowing up some enemy fleet.
After that, I thought maybe this plane might be a better fit for Brigid. It was cute! Whimsical!
After we inserted the coins in the proper slot and figured out which of the flashing buttons would start the game, the screen came to life. Instead of puffy clouds and sunshine, which I thought I could reasonably expect, Brigid was instead at war again. Another naval battle, but this time with an aerial attack.
After these two games, I wasn't about to refuse a turn in the tank. How could I? What possible excuse could I give?
At least this time I had an idea what to expect. It was, after all, a tank.
