Like the End of the World
There was something about this place Sunday afternoon that made it feel as though we were approaching the end of the known world.
It was cold and silent where we parked our car outside the crumbling village. The crow sat there and stared at me as I took several pictures, adding to the feeling that we were near someplace more forbidding.
But this place was, when it was built, more like a patch to the defenses. Called 二道关 (Èrdàoguān), it was the Second Gate in this pass, second to the primary gate. That doesn't say "end of the world" to me. That says something more like "second chance to get defending the country right."
