Light show

The Phipps Conservatory in recent years has become one of our usual visits when we are back in Pittsburgh. Partly this is due to it being one of my nephew's favorite places, and we like doing things with him that he likes to do.

On any given day, the Phipps is lovely and calm, an amazing series of greenhouses and gardens. At Christmastime, though, it is magically transformed into a holiday fantasyland. The extended hours help, too with the illusion of enchantment. Visiting the Phipps at night is unlike visiting during the day. The stillness seems quieter, with the dark outside the glass walls and roof seeming to muffle all the noise, within and without.

We wandered inside and out, admiring how the lights were combined with the usual attractions.






It was quite cold outside, one of the bitter cold and snowy nights we had in Pittsburgh in January, adding to the stillness of our visit. There were few people at the Phipps, or outside on the roads leading around the Conservatory into Schenley Park.




















There's always a fairyland sense to some of the rooms at the Phipps, but for Christmas it was enhanced.





I think we may have added to our Christmas traditions list.
