Heat Watch: Changping Changes
One of Randy's coworkers who owns his own apartment, had a bit of a shock when paid his winter central heating bill. His assessment increased by more than 50%. The last three years that we took care of this invoice for our flat, we had no increases despite the inflation in the price of coal. What changed this year?
Over the summer Changping's heating system was converted to gas-burning. It will still depend on coal, in the form of synthetic natural gas, which remains controversial in its own right. It should, however, impact the PM2.5 and even (so the article says) the dark coal ash that coats everything around here in winter.
Meanwhile, we have started to test-run our electric floor heat. We initially just turned on one room, the living room, to see how warm it would make it overnight. Our first run seemed to produce the effect we wanted, warm floors and warm air above them. I have since turned it back down, wanting to wait until we really need it. Neither child is complaining about being cold, so that is my current measure.
