Sign your name
The other day Brigid drew this picture of herself and a giraffe. It was originally supposed to be a horse, but then as she sketched a long neck, it was changed to a giraffe.
When she was done she wanted to sign her name to her artwork. Usually she just writes "B 4," an abbreviation, according to her, for "Brigid drew this when she was 4 years old." I asked her if she wanted to write out her whole name instead.
"Yes I do, but in Chinese," she replied and then admitted that she would need some help.
I pulled up the Pleco app on my phone with its valuable character-writing animation. I showed Brigid step-by-step the stroke order for 茉莉. She patiently and determinedly imitated each stroke exactly as it appeared on the screen. I posted it to my 微信 (a Chinese messenger and social app), and my Chinese friends agreed it was legible and recognizable.
I was surprised. Her interest in learning Chinese wanes more than it waxes. Unless that is about to change.
