Tigana, Ice and Fire

Last night at 3 am, I completed a binge-read of Guy Gavriel Kay's Tigana. It's a book I had not heard of until Melanie Bettinelli gushed about it last year. I bought it for Randy for Christmas, happy to see it was one of Kay's works not yet available in Kindle. As much as I rely on my Kindle (and Randy his Kindle-for-iPad) to access books while we travel all over the place, I still like to buy and wrap actual books for Christmas presents.

Randy really enjoyed Tigana, and I wanted to read it, too. I had been dipping my toes into it these past few weeks, finding it hard to put down but forced to because I do have to sleep. Last night just after midnight I had reached a point of no return, and had to complete it before i went to bed. I'm a bit drained from the read, not sure what to pick up next.

In the past year, too, Randy has been trying to get me interested in A Song of Ice and Fire books. I've been resisting, turned off mostly by what I have heard about the HBO show and its gratuitous everything. I even tried to watch a few episodes, with Randy next to me pointing out all that isn't in the books (the HBO-est parts, apparently). I just couldn't bring myself to care enough about any character to continue watching, or maybe even to read the series.

I thought about the Ice and Fire stories as I was reading Tigana. Halfway through the novel I was reading, I had already encountered brutal execution methods described, one exploded head, and a sibling pair engaged in a relationship a little like certain Lannisters.

Hmm, and I was turned off by Ice and Fire?

Oh I'm so glad you both liked it.

We did! It could have been longer, like a fully fleshed out trilogy. :-)
