Eating and drinking
We actually ate things other than asparagus on our trip. And we had a few interesting things to drink
It started with Brigid's in flight lunch provided by Luthansa.

More after the jump
In Spain I was apparently too hungry to photograph our tapas and pintxos. But I did get a picture of one of the pitchers of sangria that we enjoyed.

Also in Spain I put my Catholic Drinkie beer coozie to good use on the train. The beer was *eh* but I wanted to use my coozie.

We did eat lunch in Paris in between trains. Randy and I split a large cidre, and we all enjoyed omelettes.
In Belgium, I was so happy about all the beer choices. Part of the fun of Belgian ales, I am sure, were the brand-specific glasses. In addition to these I had Chimay Black Label and a Leffe Blonde draft.
In Germany, my kids were, I think, most excited to eat the bread. They have come to associate Germany with amazing bread.

And Spätzle

And Schnitzel

Also in Germany was the first time I tried Aperol in combination with Prosecco. Prosecco Aperol is like a Kir Royal. There is also a cocktail called Aperol Spritz, which has a little soda water in it for extra bubbles.

It is my new favorite thing, either as Prosecco Aperol or as Aperol Sptriz
There are so many things I've come to like, even in our limited experience, about traveling with kids in Italy. One of them is that we can ask at the hotel about getting pizza without feeling sheepish and guilty. It's Italy! We're supposed to eat pizza!

In Gorizia the kids and I stopped at this place, Wine Cafe 1628 for lunch. We could not resist its charms.

Yes, Myles. It looks exactly the sort of place writers take their drinks (in his case, lemonsoda) and work.

After supper in Gorizia our second night (pizza again!), we stopped at one of the several establishments on the street near our little hotel that was packed with people (and families) enjoying gelato, espresso, and cocktails. Such a crowd of people, likely neighbors, and several families, having a good time. It called for Aperol Spritz. Maybe two.
On the train from Milano to Zürich, Randy and I ate so well. Unfortunately, on this train the Swiss prices had already kicked in. I think I have stayed in cheaper Ibis hotel rooms.

And then in Switzerland, we had one of the best meals of the whole trip. It will be the subject of its own post (it was that good). But here is a hint.
