Ghosts and Empties
Now that Beijing Wonderland is being demolished after all these years of standing in a frozen mid-construction state, what's a shutter-happy ruin-seeker to do?
Maybe find some abandoned factories.

In several places along the road that runs between the Ming Tomb villages and Yongning Town, there are factory complexes of varying size that have all been abandoned. One I blogged about a few years ago even included a church building.
Among the largest is this one in the village of Xiakou. We've passed it often, but last week in the afternoon sun on a clear day, I finally had to stop and get a few pictures. Before it, too, is torn down.
I can't tell from the architecture or the layout what was manufactured here. There weren't any villagers around for me to ask either. Another day.
The size of this complex is surprising to me because the location is a bit remote. Without a railway (as far as I could tell) or water port, this factory would have to ship via truck on some very narrow and winding roads. This is in a tiny village, so also on this industrial campus are abandoned apartment buildings. Using contemporary site selection criteria, I can't say a remote locations accessible only by twisty roads would be a prime spot to build a large factory.
I have so many more questions about this place, so in the meantime, I will just keep taking pictures and come back to them time and time again (like in a Pensieve).
