Favorite place
I've posted pictures of this section of Great Wall often, and even have it as my banner above. I still don't tire of it.

More after the jump
This week during the May holiday break we had one day of such clear, dry air in the mountains north of Changping that returning to this place where we've been so many times before, we felt like we were seeing it in new ways.
Walking along the path, we stopped to see the miles of Great Wall that stretch as far as we could see. And remember the large elephant-shaped rock in the middle of this picture. It will appear again in this post.

On a clear day you can see to a Peter Hessler story.

Seriously breathtaking on this day.

Driving back to Changping, Randy pulled the car over for me to see something that I had missed the few times this was visible. We could see my favorite spot from the road, he had been telling me for a while.

"Come on," he said. "You can't miss it."
But I did, as I had every other time before, until I noted the elephant-shaped rock formation. Just a bit to the left, and there it was.
At this point I was more in awe of how the Great Wall was so dwarfed by those mountains. Were they that big all along, I wondered, because they didn't seem it when we were closer. Funny, I understand point-of-view and the mechanics of perspective, but neither mattered when I looked out with astonishment at these mountains and the speck of Great Wall guarding the pass below them. This I really was seeing for the first time.
