Watching for smoke

For at least the first few days, if not the first two weeks, of March, people in the Vatican and I have a lot in common. Other than the Catholic part, of course. The Papal Enclave happens to be convened coincident to my spring Heat Watch.

Like those in Rome, I am obsessively checking a chimney for its output, noting the amount and color whenever it may change. For instance, this afternoon was 20 degrees warmer than the -11 C I woke up to this morning. Our central heat was once again turned off for the day, though I expect it will run again tonight. The days may be warm enough to shed layers, but the nights are still below freezing.

This evening, just before dinner, this was what we saw.

White smoke, black smoke, what kind of and how much smoke do I see? I keep my eyes on the chimney, noting every little change, and what it might mean.

I never thought living in Changping would ever be so much like being Rome.
