This month my column "Alternate Routes" was about the brief but glorious time last year that Changping had a French Restaurant. I blogged about it when we first went there, last February, and it was closed by mid-summer.

I asked my friend to repeat herself because that did not sound possible. French restaurant. Changping. 

This wouldn't necessarily be an unexpected announcement in other parts of Beijing, inside all the other ring roads where international cuisine is readily available from multiple establishments. But in Changping, outside the Sixth Ring, it was completely unprecedented. We had scores of great Chinese food choices, but very limited options for Western dining, short of the ubiquitous fast food chains.
