Watching the Super Bowl in the US

Not since 2007, and for Randy not since 2005, have we watched the Super Bowl in the United States. Our winter trip continues until after this conference later this week, so we went to my sister's in Pittsburgh to share an evening of food and football.

For such a long time for us the Super Bowl has been broadcast during the breakfast time, that I was delighted to eat supper food, rather than just American snack food, while we watched. I've enjoyed deciding what beer pairs best with scrambled eggs and toast in the past, but it was nice eating soup and pasta for a change.

Of course, without the Steelers in the game, our allegiances were up for grabs. On one hand, a Ravens victory would mean that the Steelers would still be the only NFL team with six Lonbardi trophies (or as I like to say in my own special Chinglish, the zui hao-diest). On the other hand, THE RAVENS!!!! So instead we found ourselves rooting for the power outage. In the end, the Steelers sort of won, getting to keep the distinction of the most Super Bowl wins.

The best part, though, was that it was Ray Lewis' last game. During the playoffs I realized it's been six years since I first blogged about praying for this controversial player. I am happy now that he will no longer be one of my intentions. It wasn't as much for his soul as for mine; prayer kept me from thinking and saying all the kinds of things about him that could be said by a non-fan. Au revoir. Auf Wiedersehen, Adios. 再见. Enjoy your retirement, Ray Lewis as I enjoy my retirement from you.
