It's a kind of magic

One of our must-see destinations every time we come home to the US has to be a public library. Usually we go to the Children's Room at the large Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh. For Myles it is a visit to a place as familiar to him as any family member's home as we used to spend so much time there when he was little. Brigid, though, has much more limited exposure to our favorite library, or any library for that matter. It isn't that there aren't libraries in China, but we aren't clear on whether there actually is one in Changping. For now, the Bookworm fills some of that void for us, especially during the Literary Festival, but it isn't the same.

I mean, look at this place. Surely it is full of magic.

I just love the Children's Room of any public library, but I must confess the one at the Carnegie Library Main Branch holds a special place in my heart. Our home has always been full of books, but not nearly as many as at the library. What a place for kids to explore the world and still be home for lunch!



I really wanted our kids to enjoy a library lifestyle, the free and unfettered access that I wouldn't mind they take for granted. At least that would mean they were accustomed to using the library often. Perhaps it is better, though, that they view it as a privilege of being in the US. Maybe that makes it seem that more more of a magical place.

I'll just keep telling myself that as we venture to the library only a handful of times a year.
