Heat Watch: Midnight Special
"Look North!" Randy yelled from his home office.
I went to the kitchen, wondering what on earth there was to see so close to mignight.
Oh. There in the lights of the construction site several blocks away.
I hadn't noticed any smoke earlier in the day when I was standing in that same spot cooking supper.
Around 8:00 this evening we had been outside our entrance, lighting our jack-o-lanterns to show one of Myles' friends in the neighborhood. Myles thought he could see some exhaust escaping our smokestack, but I could not.
When I saw the white smoke in the middle of the night, then, I instinctively reached for the radiator. Still cold. From inside our apartment, too, we cannot see the exhaust from the plant that heats our building, so I don't know if it was also spewing smoke tonight. The smoke we saw, though, was likely just from the furnaces starting-up. No one else on the central heating in Changping probably has heat now, either.
And we continue to watch for signs.
Update 9:00 am. Last night's plume that was so great and white is now much diminished and brown-ish. Another Changping smokestack I can see in the daylight shows no evidence of exhaust. I saw on Twitter, though, that there are buildings down in Beijing proper that have heat.

When I see the smoke coming out of the chimney, especially the slight wisp of the earlier photo, I immediately think, “…the worst pies in London.” Perhaps they aren’t burning coal in the fires, Mrs. Lovett.
