Bookworm International Literary Festival 2012: Xiong Lei
After American Peter Brown and British Emily Gravett, I was really wondering what would happen at Chinese children's book author Xiong Lei's appearance. Both Brown and Gravett followed a format with which was familiar to me as an American--introduction, why I am an author, book readings, then book signings. After last year's event with Wang Hongying, I was not sure what to expect.
We came into the room and there were potatoes, paint and paintbrushes.

Xiong Lei introduced himself and described the activity. The children were to observe the person sitting across from them, and paint their face. They could practice on the paper on the table, then paint directly onto a potato. He handed over the stage to two other teachers who demonstrated the steps the kids should take to draw first on the paper and then on a potato.
Only in the last few weeks, Brigid's drawing has gone from scribbles to circles and representations. Still, I was surprised to see her painting a recognizalbe face.
After practicing, the kids could move onto potatoes.

Xiong Lei was available for book signing and photographs afterward. We had just purchased one of his Chinese-language books to give to Myles' Chinese teacher.
And that was that. It was certainly a memorable activity, even if without mention of his books or his art.
