Though we're not Swedish

You know you are in a Swedish town when you see these Christmas decorations on every table at the local coffee shop.

I really enjoyed reading all the Catholic Mom blog posts about St. Lucy's Day, like Melanie's with that beautiful braided bread ring. I always forget about Santa Lucia because where I grew up, it was a Swedish holiday. For us Catholics, the extent of observing that feast day was going to the Lutheran Church and watching them.

Over the weekend, I got to hear a repeat of A Prairie Home Companion in which Garrison Keillor explained how Scandinavians were indebted to the Italians because of how much Swedish Lutherans venerate the Sicilian Saint. He even sang a humorous song that began

Santa Lucia
She wasn't Swedish
She came from Italy
Dressed very prettily
Of course, I had to laugh out loud.

My mom had her "God Jul" sign on the wall and her dala horse on the mantel.
