Glorious food

On the Great Wall Fresh Post the other day, Donna commented about how much she missed Chinese food since she has moved from Beijing (um, to Jordan!). I hear that a lot from my Western friends that have left China, especially since the style of Chinese food served outside this country resembles little what we eat over here.

I found myself thinking that while I have enjoyed some fantastic meals these past five and a half years, I could not come up with a single dish that I would miss that much. And then I had dinner last night and shoveled an entire order of this into my mouth. I may have forgotten to share.

I don't even know how to describe this. I can state the obvious, it's a salad of toon leaves and blanched walnuts. But to categorize the flavor is difficult for me. Sure, it's rather salty, but then there's this peppery element, and some sort of herbal hit in the back of the throat. Sprouts should be more bitter, but these are not. I know I am eating them out of season, but now that there are farms that sprout them all year round, I never have to go without.

This I think I would miss.
