Euskirchen, Germany
We flew from Beijing to Frankfurt, Germany, stayed in the airport Ibis the first night, and the next day traveled by train to Euskirchen, a small town near Köln and Bonn.
Euskirchen had suffered extensive damage during World War II as the railroads were very close to the town. Because of that, very little of Euskirchen's history is preserved in buildings. There is some, such as the remnants of the old town wall and at least one church. St. Martin, that dates to the Middle Ages. The first St. Martin was built in 870, but the current building as it exists today was completed in the 1800s. It still sits next to surviving town wall. The wall once stretched around the town, but now only connects a few towers.
While Euskirchen was certainly more than we could have hoped for, through our hotel we found an even more interesting place that was nearby and unknown to us, Bad Münstereifel (next post).
