I will forever think of Cardinal Zen's most daring challenge to the authorities in China came when he was teaching at the Sheshan Seminary in Shanghai in 1989 and celebrated the first Mandarin language Novus Ordo Mass, ad populum, in a registered church without government approval. More than any strong statement he makes outside of the PRC, this first Mass was a constructive move that created momentum.

Some Catholics wonder how Rome can excommunicate over this matter lickety split despite having had the padroado arrangement with Iberia for centuries....while Rome for decades can't seem to excommunicate Catholic pro abortion politicians. I don't get it.

And excommunicating a Bishop isn't just a singular judgement. His priests could be affected, and the lay people of his Diocese. That's what worries me. Bishop Li of Beijing avoided excommunication this time because he was not at Shantou (but at Leshan). But who knows for how long under these conditions?
