Movie time

Growing up in a small, industrial town, I remember a lot of places or things that I enjoyed when I was younger that aren't there anymore. A movie theater, a bakery that smelled so strongly of doughnuts I was never certain of whether I loved it or was nauseated by it, a shoe store (two actually, but one I really liked better), a five-and-dime store that had a coin-operated horse ride, to name a few. For my mother and her sisters, the list is different and even longer. In Pittsburgh, local public television fixture Rick Sebak has produced a show actually called Things that Aren't There Anymore, which is countered by Things that are Still Here.

One of the most fantastic things about my little hometown that is still around is our Drive-In Movie Theater. Two years ago, Myles got to experience it for the first time, and recently we were able to return to watch Kung Fu Panda 2. 

The movie was fun, much better than I expected, but regardless, I love the whole experience of going to the Drive-In. We arrive just before dusk, giving ourselves ample time to find a great spot easily and get ourselves settled.


We make a visit to the snack stand, behind the projection booth.






I love how it feels like we've stepped back in time, or maybe a place when nothing ever changes. Even though they now serve trendier refreshments like smoothies, the classic favorite is popcorn.



Back at our cars, we set out the chairs and blanket. It's a beautiful night, so why stay in the car?



Yes, it remains my favorite way to watch movies.



I'm so fortunate that I can still share this with my kids.
