All we like sheep have gone astray
I love this time of year in Beijing, and especially up here in the northern mountains. Before most of the trees have leaves, the fruit trees bloom in almost imperceptible shades of white and light pink.

I know I said it last year, but it looks like the hillsides are crowded with giant grazing sheep. Isaiah 53:6 comes to mind when we drive past this, especially the setting from The Messiah, since it is Lent.
This past Sunday we had exceptionally clear air with intensely blue skies. I was compelled to take pictures on our walk through some farmland just to capture the blue of the sky. It was also very windy where we were, somewhere north of Changping.

There's a lot of reasons why people seek out Wild Wall. For some, it's the authenticity of finding the unreconstructed sections, for others it's the uniqueness of the experience. Perilous climbs often accompany such fantastic views, so there is often a physical challenge as well. For me, I am sometimes drawn in by the quiet and the solitude, but not merely out of tourist-avoidance. I can't help but wonder how cold and lonely life must have been for the Ming soldier stationed out here.

Stunningly gorgeous, but lonely.
