Super Bowl XLV
My Happy Thought today has been this: Ray Lewis was not playing in the Super Bowl today. Seriously, this thought got me through the day.
But in the end, the Packer-heavy front of the room was the happiest.
Once again we enjoyed meeting people whose paths have crossed Western Pennsylvania and have either inherited as a birthright or developed a love of the Steelers. Early in the game a young blonde woman in a Polamalu t-shirt excitedly asked to take our picture to send to her mother. She had been born in Erie but grew up in Colorado. At table near ours were a father in a Randle El jersey and his teen aged son wearing Roethlisberger's. The father had a slight accent, almost German-sounding to me, but his son had none that I could detect. During a commercial break I asked where they were from. Originally from Holland, they had lived for a time in Sewickley. I mentioned that my sister at one time lived near there, too, and used to sing at the same parish church that was attended by Mario Lemieux. The son laughed, and said that Alexa Lemieux had been in his grade. Also sitting near us was a Chinese man who had attended graduate school at Pitt for two years and then worked for Respironics for a few years before returning to China.
And in the name of the Steeler Nation, we claimed Frank's Place. Even though the Steelers were not awarded the Lombardi Trophy and the going-to-Disneyworld moments, let the record show that this morning Terrible Towels flew here.
The result wasn't at all what we wanted, but at least for a while we could be proud of the fight that was in the Steelers. There were some amazing moments worth celebrating.
