The rocks are bleeding
Sunday was Myles' actual birthday, and his only request was he wanted to see some Great Wall. Unfortunately, Sunday was chilly and grey (as every day since then has been), and we weren't prepared for any outdoor activity (yes, I am buying and unpacking long underwear). With enough juice and dried fruits and fresh pretzel bread from the import grocery store, he was happy to take a long drive out to the Miyun reservoir area North East of the city to see some wall we had never seen before.
These roads winding through the mountains we had not yet been on. Mid-October was already accompanied by some color changes, most noticeably in the sumac, now glowing red, and these vines which we had not noticed in other parts of Beijing closer to us. It wasn't a sunny day, but the light through the grey was bright enough for these vines to pop. It looks as though the rocks are bleeding, I commented to Randy.

Yes, we saw Great Wall eventually, too, but in the greyness of the day, it doesn't show up as well in the pictures as these sanguine branches.
