The new church in Bao'An
In what feels almost a lifetime ago, we had the great fortune to attend a ground-blessing event for a new church to be built in Shenzhen in Bao'an. It was in April of 2007, and while over the years I tried to keep tabs on how the construction was going, I never had the opportunity to get back to this part of Shenzhen when we still lived there or on any of our visits. I wasn't sure I would even be able to find the location again.
In the car heading back to Shenzhen airport, Randy called my attention to what he thought was a Catholic church rising above the tree line. This particular expressway he rode to work every day for three years, so he quickly noticed anything that had changed.
We weren't prepared to take pictures, so this was the best we could get with our phones from the car. We were also on a tight schedule to get to the airport, so we didn't have the time to ask the driver to take the exit and let us stop.
As we drove past, I could see it facing the expressway. I was completely surprised it looked almost exactly like the church pictured on the donation flier. At the time I thought it was an artist's ambitious rendering. From what we could see from our car speeding away, it is a rather large church with the twin steeples and Our Most Holy Redeemer, arms outstretched in blessing or welcoming (I'm not sure which).
