Ten Surprising Things: Tag I'm it!

Rachel tagged me for a Ten Surprising Things meme. You should go read hers if you haven't seen them already. A while ago, Kristen tagged me for a Versatile Blogger Award (you thought I forgot, didn't you?) which has a similar theme, but only revealing seven tidbits. I think this can count as both, right?
I've been blogging for almost SIX years now. It's hard to believe that there are still 10 surprise revelations about myself, but let's give it a try.
1) I was born in New Jersey. Not a surprise to the family members who read this, but probably everyone else.
2) I didn't start blogging just because we moved to China. I had this blog for a year and a half before that. It was just another Catholic Mommy blog of pathetic humor. Now it has a Chinese twist.
3) As much as I don't like celebrity culture, I tend to fall apart meeting them. I was left tongue-tied getting an autograph from Evan Dando at a record shop appearance in Minneapolis. The exchange went like this:
Oh yeah, I turned twenty-four that day, not fourteen. I did much better a few years later at a party for Anton Corbijn seeing Dave Gahan (whom I had to forgive for mistaking me for waitstaff). I steered clear of him the rest of the night as my impulse was to throw myself to the floor and lick his ankles. Fortunately, Lars Ulrich, who was also invited, couldn't make it, otherwise my head would have exploded.
No, I don't know Anton Corbijn. I was there with a friend of mine, Collette, who at that time worked for a gallery in New York that represented him. She has her own gallery now.
5) I still hold out hope that Ben Roethlisberger will redeem himself big time. Okay, that isn't a surprise, but I just want to get that out there.
6) Did you ever check out my patent on the sidebar?
7) I am blind as a bat. My contact lens prescription is so strong they don't make soft contact lenses that would correct my vision. I have to have my semi-hard contacts specially made. I don't wear contacts for vanity, though. It's for comfort, mainly.
8) I'm not a registered Republican (there go half my readers)
9) I'm not a registered Democrat, either (and there go the other half)
10) I'm registered Independent, for no other reason than no political party can take my vote for granted. And I get a lot less unsolicited mail and email that way. I mean, really. When was the last time a leaflet changed your mind about you vote?

Me (barely keeping it together): Jen..............and can you do me a favor? Can you write "Happy Birthday" on there, too? It's my birthday (it was).
Evan Dando does write "Happy Birthday" on the CD cover, with a heart underneath it, causing me almost to pass out.
Me: You can put your name on it, too.
Evan (looking at me like I'm the one who should be admitting to being dosed on cold medicine): It's an autograph? I *plan* on it?
