In the past few weeks, we've run into road construction on the countryside highways that wind through the mountains. In addition to ripping up the roads and repaving them, the road crews have also been working on the guard rails. What's amazed us, though, is that these crews are not only installing plain barriers. Many have been cemented over with details shaped in the cement. A conventional guard rail, for instance, would be look instead like a log fence lining the side of the road.
Last weekend we got to see a crew complete the finishing touches on one more complicated roadside barrier. What was once a plain cement-covered wall is now something else.
A few of these two-lane highways are now lined with these necessary safety measures concealed under more decorative layers. There are many possible pragmatic, or even suspicious, reasons for this (hiding defects, or putting the most possible people to work on a single project, to name two). Ignoring these possibilities, though, we really admire the attention to these details, something that makes the road seem even more inviting. Flowering branches are obviously not critical to completing a new paving job. But wouldn't it be nice if they were?
