Survivor
My hometown's local paper has recently been running a series of profiles of cancer survivors to help raise awareness for what has now become a huge community-wide event, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
Just the other day they profiled my friend Bob's sister Brenda. Brenda has truly been battling cancer for thirteen years and beating odds and diagnoses all along. You can read her profile in the Kane Republican online. Some of my high school and college friends have turned or are turning 40 this year, a few years ahead of me yet. I understand that can be hard to take, but then I think of Brenda, and people like her, for whom 40 is an achievement, a victory.
