Signs

Sign on the ice cream cooler of a convenience store in my hometown.

What a state we are in when this sign is necessary.  Leaving aside any discussion of what food stamps should or should not purchase (please!), consider instead that here the questions that this sign answers arise so often that this store actually has two of these taped to the glass.

why can't food stamps be run like WIC? someone just talked about this on another blog i read the other day - there is no reason there can't be nutritional restrictions on government handouts designed to help people eat!

(so says someone who is currently ENROLLED in WIC)

Yeah, I didn't want to get into a discussion about whether ice cream is allowed with food stamps. I really was more interested in that there are so many people in this town on food stamps that this kind of sign exists.

I'm shocked that it can be used for icecream, too. Then again, I was shocked by how many college students are on assistance, including able-bodied legal adults without children. What happened to work-study programs?

Sounds like your hometown is in a hurt - like so many here in the US right now. Our little community is doing okay, but it has been very difficult (more difficult than I ever remember it being) for Eli (16) to find a summer job. He just got his license and has put his app in Everywhere. It's been so hard that he is actually applying at Idlewild (which has shown the most promise) and planning to live with my folks in PA this summer :(. The issue is that all of the jobs that would normally be left for junior, summer positions are being filled by adults...and of course it makes you wonder how in the world they are even making it?

Unfortunately, too, I'm not far removed from people who are as you describe--unable to find full-time work in something they are qualified for, they are trying to make due with any part-time or seasonal work (thank goodness for the census) they can find. They aren't making it in a way you would recognize.

Why not cones? Or a milkshake? Doesn't make sense to me.

Denis--It's the value-add. Food stamps will pay for foodstuff, but not food that is to be consumed in the store. A cup of ice cream is just a cup of ice cream. A cone or milkshake is an item prepared for possible onsite consumption. A fine line, indeed.
