New Year's Resolution
In the past two years I've read The Liar's Club, The Glass Castle, and, just this past week, Lit. Each of these memoirs (two by Mary Karr and one by Jeannette Walls) was hard to put down, even through the most brutal parts. The similarities between Karr and Walls are striking. The insane mothers are Texans, there is a Catholic angle to both (Karr converts as an adult and Walls is raised as one), and both go on to first marriages that lift them so far out of poverty, it lands at least one of them temporarily in the Social Registry.
After considering these books, I have come up with my new year's resolution, one that I hope lasts a lifetime. I hope to give my children such a boring, uneventful childhood that they have absolutely no material for a best-selling memoir. I know: I may be ruining their future chances at literary greatness. Such is the cost of assuring that they have spiritual and emotional security.
