Even when it isn't about the Great Wall, it is about the Great Wall

Last Friday when we were on our Yanqing County Road trip adventure, we had not planned our route to to see the Great Wall at all. However, it seems it is impossible for us not to see some part of the Great Wall even when we have no plans to do so.

We were driving along the twisty, winding road in the mountains, somewhere between Changping and Yongning. We looked out across the valley and saw this.

We were completely surprised, though I am sure that once we use the GPS coordinates we recorded and look on Google Earth we'll realize we should have expected this on this route.

Both on the way to Yongning and back to Changping, we also found this section of the Great Wall in ruins rather close the the road we traveled. These pictures were from the return drive. October's late afternoon sun absolutely illuminated this section.

We haven't tired of it yet. I have said it again and again here, but I really am in awe of how something so large, and imposing, and solid can appear so delicate like a ribbon at the same time. I mean, look at the first picture of this post. How is it possible that it looks like this massive stone structure was simply blown there and caught in the ridges?

Yes, they do. It started this year after I left SZ. I have read online every Sunday 11 am and a friend that goes to the earlier Chinese Mass just texted me 11:30, so the first time you go, get there at 11 just in case:-).
