Return to Mutianyu
We've had a string of just stunning blue-sky days the past week or so. They are such a welcome relief after the typical grey haziness that usually blankets this area. Randy thought that Saturday would be a great day to return to Mutianyu to see how it looked with the improved visibility.
Oh wow, was he ever right. It was amazing. Simply amazing.
This time we decided not to walk up the mountain to reach the wall. We bought cable car tickets. This was really the right choice, what should have been a no-brainer a few weeks ago for only an extra 100 RMB. Our shared fear of heights led us then to conclude that walking the stairs and the path were better. Silly us. In minutes we were on top of the mountain.
As we kept going up, and up, and up, we could not believe that the last time we walked all the way up rather than ride up. The cable car took us to a spot, though, that was much higher up even than we had climbed on our previous visit. Here is a look down at the part of the wall that is pictured in my masthead.
How many Great Wall visits have I made in the past year? Seven? Eight? And still, I just cannot stop marvelling at how it is massive and solid and twisty and (as seen from a distance) almost delicate.
