Today's new word

pa (爬) what Brigid is doing in this video.



Does it count as crawling? Because if it does, she's crawling. If it doesn't, I need another English word for "motors around faster than you think on her own and gets into everything and leaves chaos in her wake." The Chinese word, pa, seems to cover such a range of non-walking locomotion that it does, in fact, name what she does.

I have a little girl, Elisabet, who was born just a week or so after Brigid and she started crawling the exact same way. She is the youngest of 7 and none of my others have ever crawled that way nor have I ever seen any other baby do that. After a couple of weeks she is now crawling in the normal fashion, but will still do that "crawl" over short distances.

I read your blog all the time and especially love your pictures of the Great Wall. I don't usually comment but when I saw the video I was so amazed that it was the exact same crawl that I just had to leave a comment.

My mother calls that "creeping". That's how I got around after I got out of the rolling stage, but only on hard surfaces. My young brother went from crawling to standing, but carpets made creeping hard. (No slide.)

I should mention that my youngest great-niece started creeping after she got past the rolling stage, too.

That is crawling in my opinion. Lots of kids do it differently.
