American West Vacation Homes
Just south of Changping on the Badaling Expressway is this billboard advertising vacation homes. The smallest print in English says, "American West Vacation Homes."
At first I thought perhaps Jackson Hole, Wyoming, was soon to be a vacation hotspot for wealthy Chinese families. However, I figured in a city/country where neighborhoods have names like "Vancouver Woods" or "East Provence," or even, as was the case with our last place of residence in Shenzhen, "Cote d'Azur,"Jackson Hole was probably only the exotic-sounding name for something more local.
I was right. Somewhere near the Great Wall, developers are building a resort community of American West-inspired furnished and decorated homes (danwei.org covered it last year). Why leave China when the world is recreated here?
