Huanghua Great Wall
Has it really been a week since I last posted about the Great Wall?
Yes, we had a long weekend with Dragon Boat Holiday and some fantastic blue skies, so we thought we might try to find our way to Mutianyu, a particularly spectacular stretch of Great Wall to the Northeast of Beijing. Our map being poor, we ended up getting lost. However, we were then fortunate to stumble into a part of the Wall that is beautiful but not on many tourist maps, Huanghua. These sections are not open to the public, which is no deterrent to people hiking all over it. It is, though, close to the road and really quite amazing.
Driving along, no idea where we are and BOOM! Great Wall!
At Huanghua (Yellow Flower). Earlier last week Randy was reading about how beautiful Huanghua is, especially in the summer when the yellow flowers for which it is named are in bloom. No flowers yet, but still pretty cool. It was a nice surprise to stumble upon it, which means we may never find it again.
This part of the Wall is not open to the public, but that did not stop people from climbing all over it. We did get close by walking across the dam on the left side of the above picture, but we didn't actually go on the Wall here.
From the end of this dam, just below where the Wall ends there are paths that wind around the mountain to get you up on the wall, should you chose to try it.

I hope we are able to find our way there again. From some of the roads you can catch glimpses of really old bits of Great Wall or watchtowers.
