Popovers

Why is it that I have never eaten a popover until this week? I have the recipe in one of my Moosewood cookbooks, but without pictures the description did not sound too appetizing.

Then I saw someone mention it somewhere on a blog or in a tweet (and I forgot where) and I thought, hmmmm. I wonder. They are crazy simple to make, and Myles did most of the work. We had these last night with this awesome baked potato soup. It is a wonder how just a little flour milk and egg can turn into something so fun. To one batch I added a little rosemary, and it smelled so good. I made them in my mini-muffin tins. For the size of my oven, anything made in the mini-tins turns out so well.

And for Melissa in Japan, if you are planning to live there much longer, I must say even a small oven is worth the investment. I use ours several times a week, much more than I would in the US. I would caution against going too small, as many of my American friends back in Shenzhen would have difficulty making custardy pies, for instance. At Christmas I made the most beautiful pumpkin pies.

I was going to post this picture at Christmas, but I didn't. I looked at the color pattern on the surface of the pie and immediately thought to myself,"Heh. Looks like Questlove."

I thought that would be a funny (to me) blog post, how most people see Jesus or Mary in their food when they do see something and I see Ahmir Thompson. But then I didn't post it because I figured not many people who have read my blog have even heard of The Roots. Of course, now that Jimmy Kimmel FALLON (duh!) has them on his show (has that been cancelled yet?), more people would get that.

Yum! My mouth is watering...I do have a Japanese "oven" if you want to call it that, but don't really get the full use of it because our Japanese is pretty limited and all the instructions/buttons are in kanji...also its pretty old - our landlord left it here for us and even he said it's pretty worthless.

Where did you get yours?

Is your email address posted somewhere on your blog?

I bought it at Sundan, a Chinese Best Buy-like electronics and housewares store. It is definitely a Western-style appliance, so there weren't too many to choose from. I am pretty sure that Panasonic makes one similar to this one. It is small, too small to do a turkery, but since i don't eat meat that wasn't a concern. I was just at Beijing IKEA today and they seem to sell much more expensive real ovens.
I thought my email was in my profile. Oops. jenambrose at aol

the only reason to watch the "fallon" show IS The Roots...they should just give the show to them....
