Real sharing

Last year when we were preparing Myles again to welcome a baby sister into our family, we were of course worried about resentment and all those other behaviors understandably jealous older children go through. Among the usual discussions, I told Myles that he would probably have to share a lot of with the baby, but I would not expect him to share his favorite toy/best friend, a stuffed dog he named Douglas. Douglas has been Myles' constant companion since he was about eighteen months old. I thought that he would appreciate keeping his most precious thing special to him.

Since Brigid's birth, though, I have a hard time keeping Douglas away from her.

I often remind Myles what I told him last fall, that he does not have to share Douglas.

"But Douglas wants to see Brigid," he usually says. And then he adds, "And I love her."

You must be very proud of your son. He sounds like a great older brother!

How sweet. I know we are going through the same thing right now, but I doubt a two-year-old and eighteen-month-old will have the same sense of wisdom and "love."

Aww thanks. Well, he is certainly (and sometimes aggravatingly) a normal five-year-old boy, but when it comes to big brotherdom he absolutely rocks. A significant part of his life already has been tied up in anticipating being a big brother. At Maeve's funeral he was wondering if he was still a big brother. We are just so thankful that God has blessed us again. If not for us, the parents, but for Myles and Brigid to have one another.

I'm beginning to think "resentment at a younger sibling's existence" is an urban legend. Kids aren't as anti-life as we think they ought to be.
