What a difference a year makes

Last year, during Spring Festival, our family could not wait to participate in the most exciting part (to us, anyway) of New Year's celebration--setting off fireworks! It was a lot of fun while it lasted.

For the Year of the Rat, I couldn't wait for the chance to buy our own fireworks. I found it thrilling even to be down in the streets of the Chinese neighborhood we had just moved into, in the thick of firecrackers and fireworks. This year, however, I'm not finding the fireworks quite the adrenal rush I did last year. Just walking home from the mall I am clutching Brigid's stroller, anxious to be safely on the 10th floor, above all the danger. Last year's high is this year's reason to reach for the Xanex.

The reason is obvious, and I wouldn't trade her for anything. Maybe by the time she is four years old we'll be able to buy fireworks again. I wouldn't want Brigid to miss one of the thrills of living here.
