Random Christmas Decorations

In years past I've had some fun looking at the Christmas decorations we've seen here in China. While nothing will ever match my utter surprise at seeing a Nativity Scene in the Garden City Mall two years ago, it never ceases to amaze me how popular the idea of Christmas is here.

Our garden is really decked out for Christmas. At one gate, you are greeted by Santa. Or perhaps Paul Bunyan in a Santa suit.

In fact, we have no shortage of Santas.

Our Santa theme is inclusive. Large, kitcsh, and Santas of color.


However, for dazzling Christmas decorations, the malls are the place to be. When I realized how many photos I have of mall decorations, I thought I was a total lame-o. However, in my defense, this is Shenzhen, and if it weren't for the malls, there wouldn't be much else. Really.

Santa is really popular.

And sometimes his sleigh is pulled by reindeer wearing Diane Lane's costume from The Cotton Club.


And what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a large empty sleigh, pulled by two moose and two reindeer.


And what purpose do all these Christmas decorations have here in China? Well, obviously, to provide a backdrop for taking pictures of your loved ones.
