Confinement sounds good to me

Since Brigid's birth and our discharge from the hospital, we've had to be out and about in Hong Kong a little more than I would normally want to be. One of our excursions was very necessary: get to the consulate to report Brigid's overseas birth so we could get her an emergency passport. Without the passport, we won't be able to get her a visa on Monday to return to China.

Since the consulate is on Hong Kong island, we made a short side trip to a baby superstore near there to pick up a few more things, including a stroller. We were there only Monday, before I went to the hospital. Most of the ladies working there pointed out that I was just there, pregnant. And here I was, with the baby.

A few British women were leaving the store and admired Brigid. They asked her age, and on that day it was three days old. They didn't look shocked nor did they tsk tsk me. They actually congratulated me on getting out and about already. This is of course the complete opposite of what most Chinese people's response will be.

I admitted to them that we were only "out and about" because we had some necessary things to do so we could take the baby home to Mainland China. I would have preferred to stay in bed and just feed and change the baby all day. Only one day out of the hospital at that point and the trip to the consulate was taking a lot out of me.

As I told them, the concept of confinement sounds really good to me right now. We still have to get the visa and make one follow-up visit to the hospital, and then we are in the clear to return home. Maybe then I can start my confinement.

I got a couple of looks when I had Mia in the grocery store at 8 days. I've heard from people of varying ages that at one time it wasn't heard of for new babies to be around anyone for at least the first two weeks. Of course, if I had my druthers, I druther have not done a darn thing for the first two weeks. It is taxing.

I remember I had a baby born
Dec 20th and took her with me when I went and bought a Christmas tree on Dec 23. I still remember the red and blue plaid snowsuit she wore.

When my eighth was born at home, my husband had to return to work to take care of an emergency there, when the baby was 6 hours old. I had to get up and take care of the other 7 children. I made lunch for them with the newborn in a backpack.

You can do it, but it does take a lot out of you. I would have preferred a lot more being taken care of that time, for sure.
