What's in a (Chinese) name?
As we are nearing the end of this pregnancy, we have been working, of course, on the name of this baby. We aren't ready to reveal the English name yet, but we have come up with the Chinese name. To satisfy people's curiosity, we have been pretty open about the Chinese name. That name doesn't have as much meaning to us.
Over the past few weeks, two particular Chinese girls' names have been mentioned to us more frequently than others as possible names for our baby. I am guessing that Chinese naming conventions have a lot to do with the time of year for the birth among other considerations. One of these is Xue (雪), the word for snow. I had been wondering if there were some sort of winter word that would be an appropriate Chinese name, and apparently Xue falls into that category. However, more highly recommended by a few people was the name Mo Li (茉莉), jasmine. This name people were suggesting not knowing others had mentioned to us as well. Because of this, we've decided to go with this name. So her Chinese name, should she need to use it, will be Han Mo Li (韩茉莉). I think it would be fun, too, to have at least Mo Li on the birth certificate in Hong Kong, because I think that the SAR allows for both Chinese and Western/Christian names on the birth certificate. However, if this would cause a problem with the US passport, I think we'll not make the Chinese name official.
