American things I don't get

Of course, living away from mainstream America means certain "cultural" things pass me by. When I was home in July, I was completely taken by surprise by the Twilight fever. Again, I has only been out of the country seven months (not seven years), so seeing Twilight everything everywhere, so suddenly, was really weird.

The latest American thing I don't get is Ugly Betty. I tried to watch it, but it is so painful. I really don't understand the fuss.

And now, it is also a Chinese thing I don't get. Already popular on Hong Kong tv, the American copy of the Mexican original now also has a Chinese copy, Lin Wudi. Apparently, to make a cute Chinese actress "ugly" she had to gain some weight and allow her skin to darken from sun-bathing, though this picture shows no evidence of such uglification. Maybe they should have just cast a foreigner.

Twilight? Apparently you don't have to leave the country to miss that cultural reference.;')

whoa...she looks like if harry potter and cho would've had a baby!

i never heard of twilight before, either, until i read some stuff on cousin chelsea's facebook page. cedric diggory is the main character and now all the girls are swooning.

(i just realized i made two harry potter references for separate statements in this post. i'm suffering withdrawal.)

There's nothing to get about Ugly Betty: it is crap.

I've heard of Ugly Betty, but not the other things you mentioned. So don't feel too out of the loop. I highly doubt you're missing out on anything that's really good.
