Sleep on the left side, keep your sword arm free

As we were putting Myles to bed last night, we saw that one of his swords is tucked between the wall and the left side of his bed. To defend against what, I'm not sure.

Monsters under the bed? In the closet? Or when he just doesn't want to get up in the morning (is he old enough for that yet?)?

I don't know if you are familiar with this passage from the Rule of Benedict, but I offer it to you if you need to apply it to your novice, um... son!

Let them sleep clothed and girded with cinctures or cords; but let them not have knives at their sides while they sleep, lest perhaps they wound themselves in their sleep.

I had forgotten about the "don't play with knives" passage in the Rule. Years ago, when I was a student at a Spring Hill College extension, I wrote a really long paper on the use of Psalms in the Rule, and subsequently in the way of life of Benedictines. But I never touched on the no sharp objects part.
